Three Liverpool student doctors are celebrating being appointed to the Neurology and Neurosurgery Interest Group (NANSIG) committee for 2021. Here they share more about the group, including their own goals in their new roles.
The Neurology and Neurosurgery Interest Group (NANSIG) is a national organisation with more than 1000 members and over 70 regional and hospital leads. It aims to increase engagement in Neurosciences, Neurology and Neurosurgery and plays an active role in national and international research in these fields.
Three of our student doctors have become part of the organisation’s committee, beating off competition from students and junior doctors from across the country.
Conor Gillespie, currently intercalating from the MBChB Programme to take a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Surgery and Oncology, is the new NANSIG Chair. George Richardson who is completing an intercalated Master of Research in Translational Medicine steps in as Vice Chair of Media, and Year 3 Student Doctor Abigail Clynch is the new Vice Chair for Advocacy.
Conor shares, "I was interviewed for the role along with academic foundation doctors from Oxford, Cambridge, and Bristol, so I’m very lucky to have been given the opportunity!"
I can’t wait to take NANSIG forward and build on the great success of last year’s committee.
"That means promoting high quality, innovative ideas and content; solidifying NANSIG’s commitment to diversity and participation and strengthening our existing ties with leading organisations such as SBNS, ABN, BNTRC and the BNTA.”
“I think having three Liverpool student doctors on the core committee really represents the amazing opportunities for anyone to be successful here, thanks to the great links we have to the Walton Centre."
I hope this can be a foundation for future students from Liverpool interested in Neuro to showcase their hard work and initiative on a national stage.
George adds, “I have some exciting plans for what we can achieve as an organisation and am proud to be representing Liverpool School of Medicine on a national level.”
Abigail says, “It is going to be great working alongside my fellow Liverpool student doctors on the new ideas we have for the coming year!”
