Emily Wyman has had a busy weekend administering vaccines at outreach shelters around Liverpool city centre. She is proud to be a part of the vaccinator community our student doctors are helping to build.

Year 3 student Emily sees the COVID vaccination programme as a great way to get experience and help out. “It’s a great feeling to know you are making a difference. People are so grateful.”

Emily has mainly been working at the Lee Jones Centre in Liverpool which she says has a real sense of community, “Everyone is so happy to be there, there’s a great work ethic.” The opportunity to vaccinate at the outreach shelters popped up on the rota and Emily was keen to take part.

“We went to the YMCA, the Salvation Army and Green Lane centres. We were vaccinating residents as well as staff, who are of course key workers on the front line so I was really happy to be able to help protect them too. People are just so happy and grateful."

It really hits you when they look you in the eye and say, ‘Thank you so much’.

“I was even able to vaccinate a fellow University of Liverpool student who was identified as high risk. She was impressed at how quickly the vaccine had been rolled out, and proud as well I think of the fact us students were able to help out.”

Living alone in lockdown can get a bit tedious and Emily is grateful for the social interaction that the vaccination work provides, as well as her time on placement at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In between things she unwinds by doing a lot of painting and drawing.

“I just feel so lucky to be on a course where we can do something and make a contribution."

I am very inspired by the NHS staff.

"You really don’t realise just how hard they work until you see it. I only hope I will be able to work to their high standard in my future career.”

Student doctors supporting vaccine rollout

Student doctors from Years 3 to 5 currently have the option of taking on additional hours outside of their normal NHS training hours. The School and NHS partners are working together to ensure they can do so safely and efficiently.
