Three Liverpool Student Doctors awarded prestigious Wolfson prize

Three Liverpool student doctors, Conor Gillespie, Basel Taweel and Emma Wilkinson, have all been awarded the prestigious Wolfson Foundation Intercalated Award Scholarship for 2020.

The Wolfson Award is administered by the Royal College of Physicians for outstanding undergraduate students at selected Medical Schools, who are likely to pursue a medical research career.

In deciding the award the assessors took into account the calibre of the student and the merit of the proposed project, and it is a great honour for not one, but three of our students to receive this recognition of their planned pursuits in medical research.

These awards will enable these students to take a one year intercalated degree to explore research in their field of interest.

Conor Gillespie, pursuing his MPhil in Surgery and Oncology at the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB), commented:

"I'm incredibly pleased to have received the award. It means a lot to be recognised by the Wolfson Foundation, and I look forward to investing the award into my research.

By studying volumetrics of meningiomas, a common brain tumour type, you can understand their clinical idiosyncrasies and use this to guide treatment paradigms for future patients, and I hope to increase this understanding with my masters.

Thank you to Professor Jenkinson and to Abed - it is an absolute pleasure to work with you, and your guidance and support is invaluable."

Basel Taweel, who is actually sharing an office with Conor as they work on their MPHils this year at ISMIB, said of the win:

"I'd just like to express my undying gratitude towards my family and friends, my supervisors and colleagues and everyone who continues to support me throughout this journey. Medical research is becoming increasingly collaborative, and the more we can work together and help support each other, the more we can achieve!"

Emma Wilkinson, undertaking her research as part of an MPhil in Child Health for the next year, told the School:

"I was very surprised and pleased to hear that I had been selected for a Wolfson Award. I am looking forward to spending the year at Alder Hey, as well as making use of the fantastic research institute.

This year I will be working on a range of projects, all in relation to paediatric respiratory medicine, with a focus on preschool wheeze. These will involve a mixture of laboratory work, clinical data collection and data analysis.

I think this will be a brilliant opportunity to learn more about Child Health and develop my research skills."

Congratulations again to our three fantastic winners, we can't wait to hear more of your achievements over the next year and look forward to continuing to share your stories.

What is intercalation?

Choosing to intercalate is a great way to enhance your undergraduate medical studies and delve deeper into a specialism that interests you. Intercalation offers you the chance to earn an additional degree by studying a year-long course during your time on the MBChB Programme. Learn more about intercalation.
