'I would urge students in lower years to get stuck in!'

Published on

We continue to celebrate student doctors who have gone above and beyond, highlighting the stories of  commendation winners. This month's feature is Jared Murphy.

Jared was nominated by Ms Caroline Jones for “working well with the team, being proactive in both learning attitude and supporting the team in work during the SAMP time, and producing an excellent portfolio.”

Jared told us:

We continue to celebrate student doctors who have gone above and beyond, highlighting the stories of  commendation winners. This month's feature is Jared Murphy. "I was obviously so pleased to receive the commendation, it's always a great feeling to get one as you don't get a commendation every day.

I got my portfolio done early and was lucky enough to be offered a really cool SAMP project - a survey that was part of the first steps toward creating a clinical severity scoring tool for IgA vasculitis (AKA Henoch-Schönlein purpura) which could be used to assess patients coming to hospital and during clinical trials.

As I knew the end of university was approaching, I wanted to get more experience of the sort of jobs I will be doing as an F1 doctor.

The Nephrology team at Alder Hey were fantastic at making sure I was a part of the team; including me in so many stages of looking after their patients and in the distribution of jobs which a junior will be expected to do, but I was still always supported. This was some of the best preparation for next year, and I enjoyed it so much!

I would urge students in lower years to get stuck in, take on responsibilities (that are within your abilities of course) and keep asking questions and for help.”
