Moments and Milestones of 2023-24
The academic year 2023-24 has been filled with a whole host of award achievements, society successes and team sports triumphs. From fascinating research to extra-curricular victories, our student doctors have made this year truly unforgettable.
The School was delighted to celebrate the successes of our winners for the 2022-23 School of Medicine Prizes (link).
Whether excelling in assessments, Elective, or being nominated by peers, students were presented with their award from the Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Hazel Scott, and enjoyed an evening of celebrations with family and peers
“I have witnessed the courage of our student doctors, and I am incredibly proud of how they rise to challenges, support their peers and show personal strength.”
The awards were presented by hosts Dr Iain Young, Vice Dean for Risk and Student Experience, and Bee Collier, Director of Assessment and Feedback.
Student Doctor Maria Hanif received the The Wolfson Foundation intercalated degree awards (link) to intercalate on the Clinical Sciences MRes programme and conduct a research project on Paediatric Lupus.
It was celebrations all round for three Student Doctors who triumphed at the RCGP Mersey Faculty Medical Student Poster Prize 2023 (link), taking home first, second and third place awards.
Meera Shankar, Thomas Reed and Sarah Gomm entered the prize by submitting research on a Primary Care topic.
Liverpool Medics Cricket Team claimed the number one spot in the Indoor National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) (link) cricket competition 2023 for the second year running.
BME President Rhema Otache says “The feeling of winning was incredible, and it felt great to win the tournament in back-to-back years. I was proud and very happy for all the team members involved.”
Third year Student Doctor Flynn Walsh spent his birthday in an unforgettable way – helping to deliver a baby (link) for the first time during his maternity ward placement at a local hospital.
As Flynn prepared for the day ahead, little did he know he was about to have the opportunity to put his clinical skills to the test during his first experience of an elective caesarean.
“It was a privilege to be a part of and share in that moment with the family."
Student Doctor Tara Kelly impressed judges with her abstract submitted to the British Society for Rheumatology, (link) clinching a student award for her research and an invitation to the BSR Annual Conference in April.
Performing arts society Artefacts (link)put on a three-night musical extravaganza of Beauty and the Beast in February, wowing audiences with their endless talents.
Artefacts graced the stage for their rendition of the timeless classic. Across the three nights, around 40 dedicated Artefacts members delivered a showstopping performance which left audiences longing for more!
The Liverpool Research Society was delighted to welcome attendees to their ninth Annual Research Conference, ‘LivResCon9: Breaking into Clinical Academia’ in February featuring guests speakers including Colin Michie, a clinical academic and Consultant Paediatrician.
Fourth year Student Doctor Tharun Rajasekar took to the stage recently as he presented at The Royal College of Surgeons conference, (link) The Surgical Research Society Annual Meeting and the 20th edition of the Gdańsk Cardiac Surgery Meeting in Poland.
Student Doctor Vicky Bradley attended the Pint of Science (link) event to present her talk on risk communication in the field of obstetrics and how these tools empower patients to make informed decisions.
The Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine hosted their annual National Conference this month and second-year Student Doctor Esther Davies was one of six students shortlisted to present her research poster at the Royal College of Pathologists in London.
Erin Powell and Mariella Scott attended a special, invite-only event at Buckingham Palace (link) having achieved A Gold DofE Award . Hosted by The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, this occasion celebrated young people who have shown extraordinary perseverance, creativity and resilience to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

Category: Biggest Impact on the City of Liverpool Award
Winner: SNOGS
SNOGS President Katie Howick said
“Winning this award is an incredible achievement for the society and it was very special to win the biggest impact on the city of Liverpool especially after fundraising for charities we really believe are doing amazing things for the city.”
Category: Guild Values Award
Winner: BME Medics
BME President Rhema Otache said
“Getting the Guild Award shows that the BME Medics is making a difference and bringing about change within the University, the city and the healthcare system.”
Category: Course Rep of the Year
Winner: Siona Mitra
“It’s such a privilege to have been a voice for students over the past five years and be recognized for it.”
The Liverpool Wilderness Medicine Society (link) (LWMS) took part in the annual Wild Trials, emerging as crowned champions for 2024. This national competition tested wilderness skills and knowledge, pitting university teams from across the country against each other.
Their victory highlights the incredible teamwork and dedication of Wilderness members during a gruelling two days of competition and mass casualty simulations.
Liverpool Medical School Football Club has enjoyed an extraordinary year, maintaining an unbeaten record and winning a quadruple of impressive titles.
Their journey includes becoming NAMS champions, clinching the Campus Cup and Campus League and triumphing at the recent NAMS day tournament in Manchester.
The Liverpool Medics RFC has made club history this season by securing the North West Leagues (NOWIRUL) Division 4 title for the first time.
Their victory comes after a season of hard work and sheer determination during training sessions and match performances.
