Secondary Workshops
Code Breaking (Key Stage 3)
This workshop investigates the science of code making and code breaking. We study Caesar ciphers, Al Kindi, and frequency analysis before investigating the Dancing Men from Sherlock Holmes, and the Enigma machine.
Game Shows (Key Stage 3)
This workshop investigates the mathematics which can be obtained from some popular game shows including: Countdown, Blockbusters, Pointless, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
Frogs (Key Stage 3)
This workshop investigates the classic frogs problem and is aimed to introduce the pupils to the idea of a systematic approach to mathematical investigations.
History and Numbers (Key Stage 3)
This workshop investigates the properties of numbers alongside a look at the history of mathematics.
Risky Statistics (Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4)
This workshop examines misleading statistics before going on to look at quantitative risk analysis.
Pythagoras' Theorem (Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4)
This workshop uses sloping squares to find Pythagoras’ Theorem. The workshop then goes on to apply it to finding straight line distances on OS maps. It finishes with a typical question in a real life context.
Mechanics (Key Stage 4 & Key Stage 5)
This workshop investigates moments, giving the students the opportunity to design and build a weighing machine.
Proof (Key Stage 4 & Key Stage 5)
This workshop investigates the classic problem of adding sets of consecutive numbers. It then develops the idea of algebraic proof, up to proof by induction. It finishes with some exam-style questions on proof.
Universal Cycles (Key Stage 5)
This workshop investigates the problem of listing all the possibilities of arranging a set of objects. With some magic and some discrete maths, the workshop looks at how this maths can be used.
Shape and Space (Key Stages 3, 4 and 5)
This workshop explores various topics, suitable for the pupils’ age and ability level, such as: the connection between area and perimeter, estimation and measurement, circle theorems, and trigonometry and the unit circle.
Maths Improvisation (Key Stages 3, 4 and 5)
A fun look at how Maths is involved in every area of our lives. Pupils fill in slips, completing the questions ‘What is the Maths of...?’ or ‘How can Maths help me to...?’, and the presenter attempts to answer these in an informative yet humorous way. Ideal as an end-of-day session.
