The Department of Mathematical Sciences dates back to the late 19th century, when University College Liverpool was created by Queen Victoria. One of its earliest professors, Frank Carey (appointed 1886) played an important role in the college's development into the University of Liverpool, which was achieved in 1903. Carey also published research papers and textbooks, and was a renowned teacher — a modern, multitasking academic 100 years ahead of his time!
Today, the Department continues in Carey's footsteps, with innovative teaching, ground breaking research and contributions and collaborations across the university and the world, all hosted in an environment that is friendly and welcoming to everyone. Our staff are involved in research across the whole spectrum of mathematics and theoretical physics, and 95% of our research was classified as world-leading or internationally excellent by the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).
In addition to mathematics degrees, we offer joint programmes with other disciplines, including computer science, economics, ocean & climate sciences, physics, philosophy, music, and languages. Every year, we welcome students from across the UK and the world, and many of our programmes offer career-enhancing opportunities for studying abroad and working in industry. Our students benefit from teaching by internationally renowned researchers, and from our Mathematics Centre for Enhancement in Education. We use mixed approaches to both delivery and assessment, taking the best from traditional lectures, tutorials and assignments, and modern methods such as interactive learning sessions, video content and online assessment. Our graduates go on to successful careers in research, teaching, finance, computing, engineering and more. Join us in Liverpool to make the most of your potential!
