Welcome Future Business Leaders!
We are Philip & Hyacinthe your Director and Deputy Director of Studies for Business Management & Business Management with a Year in Industry, and we are very excited to welcome you to the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS).
Welcome week is all about immersing yourself in the spirit of the School’s and University’s vibrant student community so please join us for some of our sessions. Starting with…
- Welcome talk & Activity: Meet the team, get to know your programme and most importantly meet your classmates! This session will be informative and fun. And hopefully the weather will be better than last year!
Welcome week is filled with engaging activities, events, and workshops to ensure that your journey here begins on the right note, so be sure to take advantage of every opportunity.
What else can you do to make a great start at the University of Liverpool.
- Say Yes: There is so much to see and do in Welcome Week and beyond. So do try to make sure that you ‘say yes’ to some of the many opportunities that will come your way over the next few years. Jeff Bezos (Founder of Amazon) says it best: "In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story by showing up, being present, and contributing."
- Say Hi/ Hello /Hey! Networking is a key element of business, and it begins with a simple greeting. This is not easy for everyone but do try to make connections. We have a very welcoming and open community at the University of Liverpool. You never know where a simple greeting might take you!
Prof. Brené Brown (Leadership Researcher and Author) says: "Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives."
- Balance Work & Play. With all the fun, opportunities and activities its sometimes difficult to remember why you are really here! Engage with your lectures, dive into the various topics and enjoy the wonderful teaching and research that is available to you at the University of Liverpool! Nobody says it better than our close personal friend, Jay-Z (Rapper and Entrepreneur): "I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man. And every business needs balance—work hard, play hard."
We are looking forward to being with you every step of the way and cannot wait to meet you all!

Recommended reading
As you prepare to begin your studies it might be good to orient yourself in the world of business by reading these news sources:
- BBC News
- Financial Times- all students have a subscription to this service
Knowing what is topical and current in your industry is very important and will better prepare you to appreciate how the theories and frameworks that we will be discussing in the classroom are applied in the real world.
Reading widely will also allow you to develop your commercial awareness and critical thinking skills. As you know more, you can ask more searching questions and deepen your understanding. This will make your learning journey at ULMS even more engaging and exciting!
You will also get LOTS of reading recommendations once your modules begin in September!
