What Motivated you to choose Study Abroad?
I’ve lived in Merseyside all my life and now go to the University of Liverpool which is a 20 minute train ride away. I never experienced moving away from home for my studies and so when I heard about the chance to study in a different country I had to take it.
Where did you go and why did you choose this University?
I originally applied to study in either America or Australia as they’re English speaking countries and I thought it’d make things a lot easier; however I ended up being offered a place at Toulouse Business School in France. I’m really glad that I ended up going there!
What was the biggest challenge and how did you overcome this?
All of the important services that I needed, such as the bank, would operate mainly in French. Luckily for us, we had an absolutely amazing Welcome Team who would meet us wherever and help us with whatever we needed. It made our lives extremely easy.
We were given French lessons by the university but the best way to try and learn a language is to try and speak as much as possible. Learning another language is a really satisfying skill to have, plus it’s great on your CV.
What were the most rewarding elements of your time abroad?
One particular thing I enjoyed was a module we did called “Team Building for Management”. It was about emotional intelligence, understanding and controlling our own emotions and how to apply this to team work.
Obviously the fact that I would now class my French language skills as intermediate also makes me really happy; my friends came over to visit me and were shocked by how much French I could speak.
In addition to your studies, what did you do?
There’s always organised events going on in the city thanks to the Welcome Team. I visited Barcelona on National Catalunya Day and also spent a lot of time down at the river front where students meet up before a night out.
Would you recommend Study Abroad to a first year student?
I would 100% recommend Study Abroad to anyone who has the chance. Whatever your expectations are of studying abroad, it’s better.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about studying abroad?
If you’re thinking about Study Abroad you’re half way there. Apply now.
I really wanted to get into the French culture properly, and although the people are great, don’t be afraid to spend some time on your own exploring.
What skills do you think you have gained through your experience?
I’ve gained more from this Study Abroad experience than I have in the last 20 years of my life. You gain real independence.
After living here, I now know that I want to become fluent in French and work in France when I’m older. I’m currently applying for internships with as many French companies with UK Operations as I can.
