ULMS postgraduate students attended to talk on Ethical AI and Regulation

The Management School recently welcomed Pauline Norstrom, Founder and CEO of Anekanta AI and Anekanta Consulting, for a guest lecture titled "Ethical AI in Light of Regulation and Frameworks."

Delivered as part of the postgraduate AI Ethics and Regulations module, the session offered students valuable real-world insight into the ethical challenges and regulatory considerations shaping the development and use of artificial intelligence.

With over 25 years of experience applying emerging technologies across sectors such as retail, transport, and critical national infrastructure, Pauline drew on her extensive background to explore how ethical principles and evolving policy frameworks are influencing responsible AI innovation. She has previously served as Chair of the British Security Industry Association and continues to advise government and industry bodies on AI and technology governance.

Pauline’s lecture also provided a timely deep dive into the rapidly shifting regulatory landscape of AI. As frameworks evolve, the session emphasised the need for businesses to navigate not only ethical considerations but also an increasingly complex regulatory environment. With regulatory developments like the Council of Europe’s upcoming AI Treaty on the horizon, it’s clear that businesses must remain vigilant in their approach to risk management, compliance, and governance to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving world of AI.

The lecture complemented the academic content of the module by highlighting practical considerations and lived industry experience.

Dr. Atif Sarwar, Lecturer in Technology Management in Operations and Supply Chain Management, reflected on the value of the session: "After having covered philosophical and organisational challenges to AI ethics in our 'AI Ethics and Regulations' module for PG, this guest lecture introduced students to a rapidly evolving AI regulation landscape. Particularly for the UK government's recently announced AI Opportunities Action Plan, it was important for students to understand the current regulatory landscape and how an enabling regulatory regime can help facilitate businesses to continue developing ethical AI without stifling innovation."

This session was a powerful reminder of the crucial role that education, policy, and industry collaboration play in shaping the future of AI.

For students pursuing careers in technology management and AI governance, the AI for Digital Business MSc programme provides the tools necessary to develop the skills and expertise required to become an expert in this dynamic field.
