Accounting and Finance students engage in industry-focused experiences

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) guest speaker
Joanne Monkman, Student Recruitment Manager, CIMA spoke to first year students about the diverse careers available in management accounting. The group learnt what finance professionals do in some of the largest businesses in the world.
After the talk, attendees were split into teams for a business game, modelling elements of an assessment centre group task. Students had to analyse a business scenario of a fictional company and provide their strategic recommendations. Findings were presented through infographics and prizes awarded to the top three groups.
Visit to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), Canary Wharf, London
Second-year students visited IASB, the organisation responsible for setting global accounting standards. During the visit, the group attended a presentation exploring key issues shaping the accounting world, including the challenges of accounting for cryptocurrencies and recent global accounting standards updates.
Deloitte guest speaker
Phil Mills, UK Managing Partner at Deloitte and former Global Lead for Tax and Legal, delivered a guest lecture on current issues in tax. As an alumnus of the Management School (with an extensive career in finance), Phil was keen to share his insights into the latest tax developments and industry trends.
ICAEW Chartered Accountants’ Hall Trip, London
This two-day trip included a tour of the prestigious Chartered Accountants’ Hall, interactive employability sessions with industry expert Angus Farr, and an alumni panel discussion. Students also learned about ICAEW training opportunities and the ACA qualification.
