Group of final year students on field trip in London

Final year BA Business Economics and BSc Economics students recently went on a field trip to London in February, exploring key financial centres through a City Finance Tour and visiting the famous Silicon Roundabout and Tech City district.

The City Finance Tour explored the history and role of London’s financial sector. Students visited important places, such as the London Stock Exchange, Guildhall, the Bank of England, Lloyds of London, and Rothschild’s.

The guide explained how the modern banking system started, how the City of London is governed, and how Brexit and Covid-19 have affected financial markets.

A visit to Silicon Roundabout and Tech City focused on London’s growing technology start-up industry in Shoreditch and why the area attracts entrepreneurs from around the world, including successful start-ups, like Wise.

Students learned the differences between Silicon Roundabout and Silicon Valley and why companies like Google, Amazon, and Barclays occupy “the sweet spot”.

Dr Yontem Sonmez, Director of Studies for BA Business Economics, had this to say:

"Our recent trip to London with 50 final year BA Business Economics and BSc Economics students proved to be an invaluable experience. This was a great opportunity for students to see economics in action, bringing to life concepts discussed in the classroom.

"I believe this trip provided crucial real-world context for our students' learning and I hope it served as an inspiration for their future careers in business and economics."
