Careers and Alumni Evening for Business Economics and Economics students
On Monday 14 October, the BA Business Economics and BSc Economics programmes at the University of Liverpool Management School hosted their annual Careers and Alumni Evening, open to all students on these programmes.
The event offered a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable insights into potential career paths, with guidance on securing internships, placements and graduate roles.
With a combination of career advice, alumni reflections and peer experiences, students gained practical tips and inspiration for their next steps towards building their careers.
The evening commenced with a presentation by the Management School’s Careers team, focusing on the key aspects of securing roles in the competitive job market.
This included advice on preparing for internships, placement years and graduate positions, alongside useful tips for navigating applications, tailoring CVs and excelling in psychometric tests.
Second-year Business Economics student Lily Cullinan expressed her enthusiasm for the event, commenting:
“This was an amazing opportunity and perfect timing to gain insight into the experiences of past alumni and current placement students. I’m excited for the next steps in my own undergraduate programme!”
Following the careers guidance, a panel of alumni and returning Year in Industry students shared their experiences, offering personal reflections on their journeys from academia to the world of work.
Sammy Wang, a third-year Economics student said how the panel was “very insightful, as we heard directly from graduates and current students about their journeys to securing internships and roles.”
Tom Cutler, a University of Liverpool alumnus and current employee at EY commented on how: "The event was run very smoothly, and I was glad to share my time at EY while reflecting on my days as a student at Liverpool. I found the discussions to be very beneficial and enjoyed networking with students afterwards.”
Yontem Sonmez, Director of Studies for Business Economics, expressed her delight with the event’s success, highlighting the strong turnout from students:
“We welcomed a record number of students, with almost 100% attendance! It was great to hear the employability team’s presentation on job prospects, resources, and tips for psychometric tests.
"Our graduates and placement students shared their invaluable experiences of the job search process and the transition from academia. Special thanks to Tom Coleman and Tom Cutler for travelling to campus, as well as to Austin Royle and Max Walters, our placement students, for sharing their personal experiences.”
The evening concluded with a networking session where students had the chance to engage directly with alumni, faculty and their peers.
The Careers and Alumni Evening was a great success, providing students with an opportunity to learn and prepare for their future careers. A big thank you to the careers staff, recent graduates and Year in Industry students who took part.
