ULMS hosts Business Breakfast on Obtaining and Enforcing Patents
The University of Liverpool Management School held its latest Business Breakfast on Obtaining and Enforcing Patents: What Businesses Should Know on Thursday 12 September 2024.
Our speakers shared knowledge and insights into their areas of expertise within the field of intellectual property.
Aimee Cawley and Marcus Riby-Smith from Marks and Clerk shared an outline of patents, what they are, how to obtain one and what they are used for.
This was communicated in a clear and accessible way, with examples given to allow the audience to build an understanding of complex concepts.
Professor Nikolaos Papageorgiadis then built on this speaking about his research and development of the Patent Enforcement Index and what that means on a global scale. He shared examples of patent infringement and enforcement in different countries and the differences between regions.
Following the presentations, a Q&A session took place resulting in an engaging discussion amongst our speakers and attendees, with questions ranging from the basics of patent law to the intricacies of enforcement.
Aimee Cawley, Partner at Marks and Clerk said:
“Marks & Clerk were delighted to be invited to co-present with Professor Nikolaos Papageorgiadis at the first ULMS Business Breakfast of the new academic year on the subject of obtaining and enforcing patents.
“After a whistle-stop tour of the process for obtaining a patent and options for commercializing/enforcing, followed by an exploration of the details of Professor Nikolaos’ Patent Enforcement Index, it was a pleasure to engage with so many thoughtful questions from the attendees, and indeed from our host, Hazel Kennedy.”
