The University host The Price of Football Live Podcast
Monday 4 March, the Yoko Ono Lennon Centre, hosted The Price of Football Live Podcast presented by Kieran McGuire, University of Liverpool Football Finance Lecturer, and comedian Kevin Day. This award-winning Podcast that has reached millions of downloads since its launch in 2019 follows the money to find out what’s really going on in the beautiful game.
Part of Postgraduate Enhancement Week, the Paul Brett lecture theatre was packed out with students from across the university including those from our MSc and MBA programmes, many wearing their favourite football shirts. There was an air of anticipation as alumni, staff, and anyone else interested the world of football mingled anticipating a special night ahead.
And the night didn’t disappoint. Introduced by Jason Laws, Associate Dean for Postgraduate Study, the audience were treated to fascinating insights, unique knowledge, and a good amount of humour from Kieran and Kevin, firstly discovering more about Kerian’s love of the game, interest in numbers, Brighton & Hove Albion FC and his journey to where he is today.
Special guest Matt Slater, senior football news reporter for The Athletic then joined to discuss a whole host of topics from the finances of the football league clubs including Everton’s financial situation and recent points deduction, football club owners and financiers, who might be Liverpool’s next manager and the setup of sports in the US including the power of the NFL.
The floor was then opened for audience members to ask their questions. With a wide variety of topics discussed from which were the best run football clubs, the power of fans in the German football league and whether Liverpool or Manchester was the best city!
