Master’s students enhance their employability
Master’s students in the Management School have been taking part in the School’s inaugural careers-focused Enhancement Week, with more than 40 events and activities designed to supplement their academic study and maximise their potential.
Events included the Career Frontier business conference at Aintree racecourse where keynote speaker Stephen Isherwood, Joint CEO at the Institute of Student Employers, shared how to uncover the secrets of the UK labour market and access job opportunities. Students heard from a panel of successful international alumni and took part in interactive workshops to sharpen their global skills, craft the perfect elevator pitch, and expand their network.
The Empower You recruitment experience at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium gave students the opportunity to practice and refine their skills, learn how to stand out in an increasingly competitive labour market, experience what an employer’s recruitment process is like, and receive detailed and personalised feedback from industry experts.
MSc Sports Business and Management student, Megan Turnock, said of the week’s events: “Taking part in enhancement week has allowed me to develop my skills in realistic settings to prepare for the graduate job market. It has also provided a great opportunity to network and build relationships with my classmates beyond the classroom.
“I have found the feedback provided from the mock assessment centre at Anfield extremely valuable to help me identify areas that I can improve and set targets for this moving forward.”
In addition to the career-focused events and workshops, students took part in activities designed to boost their wellbeing and enhance their social network, including a sports day and inter-programme quiz night led by Puzzle Duck.
Jason Laws, Associate Dean (Postgraduate) said of the new initiative: “Our postgraduate students come from a diverse mix of geographic and academic backgrounds and we want to provide our graduates with solid foundations to thrive in today’s competitive market for talent.
The School has a long history of embedding employability into the undergraduate syllabus and we have taken some of these ideas into the postgraduate curriculum and placed emphasis on employability, data skills, and social skills. We are certain that our graduates will enter the job market better equipped as a result of our Enhancement Weeks.”
The career enhancement weeks have been built into the teaching calendar for weeks 6 and 12 of each semester. This first week was themed around kickstarting the recruitment process with future events following the journey throughout the year.
