Liverpool MBA students experience London's financial centre
Liverpool MBA students recently attended a one-off trip to London offering an up-close look at the financial industry. The trip included the opportunity to network with alumni and attend sessions with financial services organisations, covering topics including green financing, corporate governance, and consultancy careers.
Liverpool MBA student, Sabarish Satish Kumar, shares his experiences of a memorable trip.
Day one – a tour of London and meeting inspiring alumni
London is the busy and exciting financial centre of the UK and an international crossroads for business, culture, and commerce.
The first visit on our trip was to Handelsbanken, a financial institution known for its commitment to the local community. Trust, respect, and long-term relationships with customers were highlighted in a talk given by Green & Sustainable Finance Manager, Tom Patience and Marketing Director, Andrew Bingham.
The visit demonstrated Handelsbanken's dedication to providing its branches with the authority to prioritise customer needs. What then followed was a discussion with the Asset Management group, allowing us to broaden our professional horizons and network with other like-minded individuals.
We simultaneously visited the past, present, and future as we made our way through the financial area of the city, visiting the Bank of England, Guildhall, Lloyd's of London, and Rothschild & Co.
This tour highlighted the city's long and prosperous financial tradition and its rise to prominence as a worldwide financial hub. Thanks to the guide's knowledge, everyone had a better understanding of London's financial history and its bright future!
We then had the opportunity to network with the Management Schools’ MBA alums. Marialicia Izquierdo, Liam Parkin, Kathia Ramirez, Jorge Merino, and Vaishali Bisht are successful professionals who gave talks and imparted their wisdom and insight. Their advice illuminated the industry's reality, providing useful insights and setting students up for future success!
Day two – exploring future opportunities
Day two kicked off with a fantastic presentation by Nina Mohanty, who discussed the development and possibilities of fintech. Bloom, a revolutionary savings club app, has unveiled its game-changing strategy for expanding people's access to and control over their financial resources. The advantages of Bloom were discussed, as was its ability to promote community involvement by making it easier to create savings clubs.
Roy Basis of Standard Chartered Bank then spoke about the institution's history, current activities, and latest innovations in the financial sector. A highlight was a session about future career opportunities within the bank.
A memorable experience
The trip had a profound effect, providing us with valuable learning opportunities and lifelong memories. The unique combination of professional and cultural events, including informative business meetings and a fascinating city tour, provided invaluable insights into the world of finance and the exciting culture of London.
Participants' future success in the financial sector may be assured thanks to the knowledge and skills gained throughout this experience.
With thanks to the Management School, in particular to Bernie Lyons, Career and Leadership Coach, and Dr Dane Anderton, Director of Studies, for putting together such a memorable adventure!
