ULMS Lecturer Dr Leighann Spencer wins ‘Teacher of the Year HSS’ at Guild Awards
After a two-year virtual hiatus, on Tuesday 10 May the 2022 Guild Awards returned to Mountford Hall for the first in-person awards since 2019. Transformed into the ceremony of dreams, Mountford Hall was filled with incredible individuals, groups and societies who have gone above and beyond to make our campus and community a better place.
On the night of the 14th Guild Awards, there were 13 awards up for grabs including ‘Outstanding Support Award’, ‘Guild Values Award’ and ‘Teacher of the Year Humanities and Social Sciences’. Not only were ULMS lecturer’s Dr Leighann Spencer (Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour) and Dr Ahmed Al-Abdin (Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Director of Studies BA Marketing & BA Marketing with a Year in Industry) both nominated for Teacher of the Year HSS; but we are pleased to share that Dr Leighann Spencer was crowned the winner!
‘Teacher of the Year’ is awarded to a member of teaching staff for going the extra mile to support students and improve their University experience. Leighann was nominated by students for being an innovative lecturer and for adapting her teaching to incorporate podcasts, Ted Talks and apps to appeal to a wide range of learning styles. Leighann was also praised for her inclusive teaching style which always strikes the perfect balance between teaching and active reflection to ensure that all students understand the core concepts and can achieve in their assessments.
Talking about her award, Leighann said:
"I am delighted to have won the award! I'd like to thank the students for their nominations and especially like to extend my gratitude to Dr Graeme Ridgeway for his ongoing mentorship and support in teaching."
Other winners of the night include Liam Belger, Business Management student, who won ‘Student Changemaker of the Year’ which recognises those who have created positive change for students and for making the University of Liverpool a better place. India Sasha Atkinson, Business Management student, also picked up the ‘Guild Values Award’ which is awarded to an individual or group who embody the Guild Values, creating something extraordinary in the face of adversity.
