BSc Economics students win University Business Challenge
A team of Management School students recently won the 2022 University Business Challenge (UBC) Worldwide Undergraduate Challenge.
It is the second year in a row that an ULMS team has won the competition and the first time a university has secured back-to-back wins since the competition began in 1998. The win this year was made extra special by the fact that ULMS, as defending champions, hosted the Grand Final.
The UBC is the UK’s longest established simulation-based competition designed to help develop students’ employability and enterprise skills. Supported by the University of Liverpool Management School and other leading UK universities and graduate employers, over 30,000 students have benefitted from taking part in the UBC since it was founded. This year 128 teams from 30 universities took part in the challenge.
The winning team consisted of four second year BSc Economics students; Bubu Wang, Yang Yu, Benben Jiang and Renxi Gu.
Bubu commented:
"It was my team’s pleasure to represent ULMS in the UBC. At the very beginning of this competition we never expected that we could be the overall winners. In round one we initially struggled as there were so many different factors to consider for the business simulation but, gradually, we learnt how to analyse each period’s information and results to make our business a success.
"In the semi-finals and final we were able to use the skills we learnt in round one and combine these with our ability work effectively as a team under pressure; many of the tasks also required us to show our creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Taking part in the UBC really helped us grow a lot during the whole period and build many important skills. We also want to give many thanks again to our mentor Nick, who gave us a lot of advice and support. We are so happy that we could represent ULMS and defend the title won last year. We really recommend more and more students to take part in UBC in the future, since it is really a very meaningful business competition."
Nick Drape, Academic Lead for the UBC, said:
"It is always a real pleasure mentoring the ULMS teams taking part in the UBC each year and this year turned out to be another very special year! The winning team did fantastically well and for them to be able to claim the title on home turf brilliant. We also had another team in the final who, even though they missed out on the top 3, also gave an excellent account of themselves.
"The competition gives students a fantastic opportunity to build many important skills and provides them with a wide variety of things they can discuss when applying for jobs and/or postgraduate courses.
"Given the fact that until last year an ULMS teams has never won the UBC before, to win it two years in a row is an amazing. A HUGE well done to Bubu, Yu, Benben and Renxi. It was a thoroughly deserved victory and they should be extremely proud of themselves winning such a prestigious competition. I look forward to celebrating with them soon over lunch.”
