Management School holds seminar on Authentic LGBT Leadership
To mark LGBT History month, the Management School held a seminar on ‘Authentic LGBT Leadership’.
LGBT History Month is an annual celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans community, its history, struggle, and culture. LGBTHM runs throughout February, with events taking place across the University, City and Country.
The seminar was delivered by Dr Alan Greaves, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, who is the first ever academic to be accepted onto Stonewall’s Executive Leadership Programme.
During the session, Alan spoke about the ‘authentic’ leadership style he has developed as a gay man and highlighted the importance of this process for LGBT people in particular. Attendees were encouraged to think about how they can develop their own ‘authentic leadership’.
The seminar also examined ways in which the University can create an LGBT+ inclusive campus, providing practical tips and examples.
Dr Alan Gleaves commented, "When you’ve grown up surrounded by subtle (and not so subtle!) homophobic messages from adults and the media, LGBT people often internalize that homophobia. That’s why we need to know that the environment we work in is supportive and affirming, to counteract the anxiety, fear, and uncertainty we experience every day."
