Students take part in new Management School news channel
A number of undergraduate students have been taking part in the Management School’s brand new student news channel.
ULMS News was set up to let students know what’s going on around the School by covering student stories, events, current affairs and guest speakers.
Xiaomeng Lie, Dasha Korabelnikova Avtsina and Munirat Sanni were recruited to take on the role of news reporters, giving them the opportunity to develop key employability skills. They work closely with students and staff to ensure they report on any interesting stories and are also involved in script writing and researching of stories.
Recently, the reporters also had the chance to attend a session with Jo Wheeler, Sky News reporter, who gave them tips on how to carry out the role to a professional standard.
Xiaomeng Lie said “I got involved with the news channel as I thought it was something fun for me to do other than my assignments. It is also a great opportunity to learn more about the media industry and get tips from experts which will look great on my CV. I have learnt a lot about the processes involved and also had a lot of fun in the media room.”
Dasha Korabelnikova Avtsina said “I have absolutely loved being involved in ULMS News so far. The whole process of sourcing content, interviewing fellow students and colleagues and then recording the news report is very fun.
I had never presented on TV before, therefore coming out of my comfort zone and challenging myself to try something new was very exciting. Not only am I developing myself, but I am also helping others develop by broadcasting great opportunities where students can get involved in to strengthen their skills, knowledge and experiences.
The training we received from Jo Wheeler was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We’re hoping our training pays off in episode two and beyond.”
Munirat Sanni said "I got involved with the ULMS news channel because when I was younger, I wanted to be a presenter or work in media but got discouraged due to my speech impediment (stammer) and also the lack of security in the industry. However, I really wanted to make the most of my second year at university and try new things so when I saw the advert for it, I knew I had to give it a go!
I have loved it so far! I have learnt so many new things about presenting and everything that goes on behind the scenes. My favourite thing would have to be working with the team. Everyone is really supportive and encouraging and it makes the whole process better!"
The first episode is available to view on the Management School intranet pages.
