The Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, John McDonnell MP for Hayes and Harlington, visited the Management School on Friday 15th June to give his view on the Liverpool City Region economy.

The talk came as part of a wider event which looked at the contribution of the social economy to the Liverpool City Region and how its impact can be maximised.  Other speakers included; Robbie Davidson, Founder of Can Cook; Helen Heap, Social Investor and Founder of Seebohm Hill; Dr Alan Southern, University of Liverpool and Paul Nowak, Deputy General Secretary of the TUC.

Attendees included local businesses and social enterprises as well as key figures in the Liverpool City Region.  John addressed the points made by the other speakers and spoke about Labour’s view on what is needed in local economies such as the Liverpool City Region.

Dr Alan Southern said, "We have a real opportunity to shape inclusive economic growth in the Liverpool City Region and the social economy is an important part of that.

Our research shows its economic and social value and our work with the Liverpool City Region Social Economy Panel is beginning to pay real dividends around social investment, policy and practice.

As the Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell pointed out 'You've really got something buzzing here that could be built upon...'  Well, we agree.”
