Management School students take part in UBC Worldwide
Management School students have been taking part in the Universities Business Challenge (UBC) Worldwide.
11 out of 12 ULMS teams made it through to this year’s semi-finals with one of those progressing on to the final at IBM’s headquarters in London on Friday 16th March.
The team, which finished seventh and consisted of Daniel Davies - Business Management, Jake Edwards – Accounting and Finance, Nathan Craddock – Business Management with a Year in China and Ben Churchill – Business Management with a Year in Industry, was required to take part in four business simulations throughout the day. These simulations involved making decisions about a fictional company and uploading them to the UBC database which calculates how much profit the teams would make according to their choices. There were also challenges in between each stage including tasks like creating an innovative CV and a redesign of the UBC website.
Alex Williams, Business Economics student currently on a Year in Industry placement at IBM, took part in last year’s competition and gave an introductory speech about the benefit of taking part in extra curricula activities, in particular business competitions. He also pointed out how his participation strongly influenced his job offer with IBM.
Lee Wainwright, Employability Projects Officer, commented “UBC Worldwide is just one example of the many business competitions the Management School gets involved in to help students improve their employability and add value to their CVs. It is also an excellent opportunity for participants to develop skills outside of their degree that enhance their awareness of wider business issues. Well done to all of the ULMS teams that took part.”
Benjamin Churchill, BA Business Management with Year in Industry student, said "As a second year student on the Year in Industry programme, I knew I needed to take part in some form of extra-curricular activity that would really make my CV stand out to employers, and the UBC was a great opportunity to do this. Since taking part in the UBC, my decision making skills in a high pressured environment have greatly improved, something I know will benefit me in the workplace! Overall the UBC has been a fantastic experience; providing me with vital skills which greatly contributed to me securing a placement at Mercedes-Benz."
