Professor Terry McNulty’s paper noted as one of the most influential by Human Relations Journal
Professor Terry McNulty, Associate Head of School and Professor of Management and Corporate Governance, has had his 1995 paper – Power and Influence in and Around the Boardroom, written with Andrew Pettigrew, noted in a review of the most influential papers published in Human Relations between 1987 and 1996.
The Human Relations Journal was founded in 1947, and Professor Paul Edwards, FBA, has taken a detailed review up to the end of the first 50 years of the journal. The journal has played a unique role in the development of the social science of work and organisations since it began.
Professor McNulty, said: "It is very gratifying that this paper has been recognised by such an esteemed journal as Human Relations, and all that it represents within the Social Sciences. I am reminded that, at the time, the paper’s publication felt like a much-needed breakthrough as we worked hard to develop a new line of empirical work about board power and influence. It provided confidence and momentum to continue with this line of work, strive for further access to boards and corporations, obtain funding for research and develop a voice beyond academia about board and governance effectiveness. Andrew and I are delighted by this news and recognition."
Rory Donnelly, Professor of HRM & Organisational Behaviour and ULMS REF Director, commented: ‘Terry is a leading academic researcher in governance, board behaviour and effectiveness. It is no surprise that the paper he wrote with Andrew Pettigrew, which is a pilot study of the power and influence of part time board members in the top 200 UK industrial and commercial firms by turnover and the top 50 UK financial institutions, has been included in this review. I, on behalf of the whole of the Management School, offer my congratulations to Terry and Andrew on their inclusion in the review.’
