Industry-led Horseracing MBA nears end of first year

The University of Liverpool’s Thoroughbred Horseracing Industries MBA which launched in September 2015, is nearing the end of a busy first year. As well as teaching traditional MBA topics and specialist content covering marketing, sponsorship and veterinary issues as they apply to the industry, the programme has offered a packed schedule of guest speaker events and visits to racecourses, media companies and training facilities.

Guest speaker highlights included the CEO of Racing Welfare, Dawn Goodfellow; Executive Director of Racing Business and Operations at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Anthony B Kelly, and Chief Veterinary Officer at the British Horseracing Authority, Jenny Hall. In March students gained insider knowledge of race day event management, with a behind the scenes tour of activities at Haydock Park. In the same month students attended a panel session which focused on broadcast media for the horseracing industry. This included the Executive Producer of Channel 4’s racing coverage, Carl Hicks, and was held at MediaCityUK in Salford. A visit to the National Stud in Newmarket is planned for April and will cover a range of topics related to thoroughbred breeding.

Neil Coster, Director of the MBA Programme said:
“The industry engagement in the programme has been first class, we have been able to complement MBA academic content, with wide ranging, insightful and state-of-the-art horseracing  industry expertise.”

Run in partnership with the British Horseracing Authority and the Horserace Betting Levy Board, it is the only MBA in the world which focuses on the specialised needs of the British and global horseracing industry and is designed for those who want to develop leadership and management skills and enhance their career prospects in the industry.

The inaugural part-time cohort consists of senior managers from major industry employers, including The British Racing School, Jockey Club Racecourses, Ayr Racecourse, The Injured Jockeys Fund, Kambi Sports and the British Horseracing Authority.

The programme is now recruiting for the next intake of part-time students in September 2016. To watch students discuss their experience of the programme please visit: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/management/mba/student-stories/horseracing/
