Management School hosts annual North West Doctoral Training Centre conference
On the 14th and 15th May, the Management School hosted the annual North West Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC) Economics PhD conference at Ness Gardens. The conference, organised by PhD student Robert Edwards, hosted a variety of presentations and discussions across different areas of economics. Around 100 researchers attended, including PhD students, prospective PhD candidates currently undertaking MSc degrees, as well as academics and senior academics from all NWDTC institutions. Students presented from the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster and Manchester and topics included Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Education and Development and Health. Two keynote speakers, Professor Urs Schweizer and Professor Ron Harstad also raised academic debates relating to Law and Experimental Economics.
Harvey Upton, an MSc Economics student who attended the conference, commented: ‘I thought that the event provided valuable insight into how a PhD progresses. By viewing several presentations from students at different stages of their work, you could get a sense of how things develop and the challenges that are present along the way.’
Sanna Laksa, another MSc Economics student and potential PhD candidate echoed this, saying:‘The conference was a great experience. I had the opportunity to meet and speak to experts in the field of economics. It was also inspiring to see how PhD students work and get a feeling of what is expected of doctoral study. I left the conference excited to start my own PhD work and eager to excel in delivering a good thesis like the ones I saw.’
