Students return to campus after their Year in Industry.
Third year Management School students enrolled on the Year in industry programme recently returned to campus to complete an assessed presentation reflecting on their time in the work place.
As part of their four-year programme, students have spent a year completing a placement across the UK in a breadth of different business roles. Students undertook positions within a variety of companies including IBM, PwC, Puma, Deloitte and O2.
They were able to demonstrate a wealth of newly developed skills and a better understanding of life in the work place whilst still referencing previous knowledge which they had gained in their university studies.
Steffan Davies (Business Studies with a Year in Industry) worked at Essar Oil UK. He said:
“I applied to do a year in industry to get ahead of other graduates and to give me more experience. I also believe that there are skills I’ve learnt which will help me in my final year of university. In terms of the support I received from the Management School, the careers service was incredibly useful; they helped me in terms of reviewing my CV and interview techniques.
As a result of this experience I believe in myself much more now and have confidence in time keeping, communication and managing people much older than myself”.
Employers were also present to give their support to the Year in Industry programme and for their placement students.
Tom Robinson, Sales Operations Support at Puma, said:
“The year in industry programme is really important for us an employer because it’s an opportunity to find key talented people, particularly young people fresh from university who are able to apply that knowledge and a new way of thinking. It makes a change to have someone new and enthusiastic come in who really wants to learn, benefit themselves and add a lot of value to their degree. For us it’s about coming in and making a big difference, gaining a lot from us and giving something back to the company”.
