Abstract
Entrepreneurial expertise (EE) remains a core concept in entrepreneurship theory and education.
However, research into EE has stalled and a number of criticisms have emerged within the academic community.
We develop three novel premises to advance the theory of EE: (a) contexts (taking the form of practices) are endogenously constitutive of entrepreneurial expertise, (b) entrepreneurial expertise, in the form of cognitive processes and competencies, are ontologically wedded to practices and their relations, and (c) entrepreneurial expertise is also displayed and negotiated in the moment by ‘entrepreneuring’ practitioners themselves.
These new premises contribute to theory on EE in three main ways: (1) they reinvigorate the conceptual link between EE and success; (2) they clarify the distinction between doing EE and giving competent discursive accounts of one’s actions; and (3) they contribute by theorising EE as a phenomenon done by entrepreneurial practitioners for entrepreneuring practitioners.
