Rachael Lem

My experience as a young woman within the world of academia has always been a positive one. I started my career as an undergraduate within the Environmental Change group at the University of Nottingham which is lead by a predominance of women. Now, here at the University of Liverpool, my primary supervisor is female, as are a large number of my immediate peers. Perhaps it is my girls’ school education, but I have never felt that my gender has stood in the way of me working towards, or achieving, any academic opportunities.

In my eyes the University of Liverpool provides a gender neutral approach towards both academic and career development. I particularly appreciate the LivWiSE lecture and networking series that is run; this delivers not only encouragement and support for women in my field, but creates an excellent external message which is both thought provoking and powerful.
