Professor Ivona Mitrovic
Can you tell us about your role and career pathway?
I am a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics. I hold a PhD degree in electrical engineering and electronics from the University of Liverpool, an MSc degree in materials science from the University of Belgrade and BSc EE degree in microelectronics from the University of Nis.
Do you have an area of expertise / research?
My core research activity has largely been focused on novel materials to facilitate an unprecedented level of scaling of silicon chips. I have established a substantial track record in the area of thin high-k dielectrics and played a pivotal leadership role in collaborative efforts to achieve ultimately scaled gate stack in the European PULLNANO and NANOSIL projects. The research work on the gate stack for the 22 nm CMOS technology node has been recognized as a significant achievement in the EC final review in April 2009.
I have led activity on innovative germanium devices for their industrial production target in 2018. My current research focuses on nanodevices for terahertz energy harvesting and healthcare applications (in-sole gait sensor). I have been principal and co- investigator on a number of projects, mainly funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), with a contribution of ~£1.5 million.
I authored over 100 journal and conference proceedings papers, and gave over twenty talks at international conferences in Europe and the USA, including IEEE SISC, ECS, AVS, EMRS and INFOS conferences.
I have been vigorously promoting engineering profession through my research and through devising and teaching a number of engineering modules.
In terms of teaching, my focus has been to inspire and transform engineering students into future academic and industry leaders through research-led teaching. My strong interest has been in building and collaborating with diverse, world-leading interdisciplinary research teams in academia and industry. My research focus is on setting agenda for new exploration in the area of emerging technologies, nano- and bio-electronics.
