Dr Esther Garcia-Tunon

Lecturer in Materials Science and Engineering

Dr Esther Garcia -Tunon is a Senior Lecturer in Materials Science and Engineering. Esther studied Chemical Engineering as her degree subject, she was inspired to choose this degree, due to the opportunities it gave to study topics she enjoyed, such as Chemistry, Materials, and general Engineering.

Prior to Esthers degree, she studied A-Levels in Chemistry, Physics and Maths, and had a passion for science. Now, as a Senior Lecturer, Esther most enjoys pushing boundaries in multi-disciplinary research in materials, complex fluids, and manufacturing, creating new knowledge and answering questions that no one else has answered before. Esther also enjoys supporting and facilitating the development of enthusiastic and committed junior researchers and students, for example through mentoring and training. She enjoys being part of the academic community.

Dr Esther is passionate about science in general, she states how hard it is to choose one topic over another. This led to Esther enjoying the multi-disciplinary aspects of her research. Esthers’ curiosity and love for learning never ends. Esther states “Being at the boundaries of different research areas keeps things interesting and challenging!”

Esthers’ UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship has been one of her most exciting projects, and she urges others to continue finding joy and find your purpose through the challenges that you will certainly encounter. Also, don't forget to celebrate big and small successes.”

Esthers’ top tip for working in the industry is to “focus on the strengths, on what works, and carefully reflect on what doesn't to navigate the difficult moments. Focus on the priorities that lead you to progress.”
