Competition Rules

The rules for the ‘Science in Creative Writing: Powers of Nature’ competition are as follows:

1. The competition is open to Year 5 pupils at the participating University of Liverpool partner schools. Those pupils who did not attend the university workshops are still encouraged to enter.

2. There are two categories:
(a) poetry
(b) prose (this can be a short story or descriptive passage)

Poems must not exceed 20 lines in length. Prose pieces must not exceed 300 words.
Each entrant is permitted to enter both categories i.e. one poem and one prose piece per person.
For each category, there is a first prize of a £50 book token and runner’s up prize of a £25 token.

3. Entries should engage imaginatively with the literary and scientific research of the University of Liverpool documented on the ‘Powers of Nature: resources’ webpages and encountered on our workshop visit days.

4. All entries must be the original work of the entrant, and should not have been published previously, accepted for publication, nor entered elsewhere. Copyright remains with the author of the entry, but the University of Liverpool reserves the right to publish entries on the University’s Literature & Science Hub website or elsewhere.

5. All entries should be in .doc or .pdf format, and preferably typed. Scans of (legible) handwritten work are also acceptable. The document pages themselves should be anonymous, but please put surname, first name, and school in the filename (in that order).

6. All entries must be submitted (via your teacher) by 5pm on Friday 3 March 2017. Ensure that your teacher receives your entry in good time prior to the 3 March.

7. The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence can be entered into with individual entrants.
