Competition Rules
The rules for the ‘Building for the Future’ competition are as follows:
1. The competition is open to all pupils at Key Stage 2 and 3 at schools in the Greater Merseyside area.
2. There are two categories:
(a) Years 3-6 (KS2) poetry (maximum of 25 lines) or prose (maximum of 250 words)
(b) Year 7-9 (KS3) poetry (maximum of 40 lines) or prose (maximum of 500 words).
The prose entry can be a short story or descriptive passage.
For each age group, there is a first prize of a £50 book token, a second prize of £30 book token, and a third prize of a £20 token.
3. Entries should take as their starting point one of the prompts from the University of Liverpool on the ‘Building for the Future: resources’ webpage and (where applicable) encountered on our workshop visit days.
4. All entries must be the original work of the entrant, and should not have been published previously, accepted for publication, nor entered elsewhere. Copyright remains with the author of the entry, but the University of Liverpool reserves the right to publish entries on the University’s Literature & Science Hub website or elsewhere.
5. Entries should be in .doc or .pdf format, and preferably typed. Scans or photos of (legible) handwritten work (in .pdf or .jpeg format) are also acceptable. The document pages themselves should be anonymous, but please put surname, first name, and school in the filename (in that order).
6. We store the personal information that you have shared with us securely and use it solely for the purpose of the competition. Access to your personal information is restricted to the employees of the University of Liverpool on a need-to know basis or as required by law. The length of time that we keep your personal information will depend on the outcome of the competition. Personal information of the winning entries (first name, age) will be used alongside selected poetry/prose in publication (online or printed) with prior agreement of schools/individuals.

7. All entries must be submitted to your school/ teacher, who will then send to us at writingcomp@liverpool.ac.uk (this can be in a zip file or individually). All entries must be accompanied by a completed Questionnaire from each school. The deadline for each school to submit entries to the university will be 5pm on 15th November 2019.
8. Winning entrants will be invited to a celebration in 2020. A selection of entries, including the winners, will be published on the University of Liverpool’s Literature & Science Hub website.
9. The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence can be entered into with individual entrants.
