PPH Management

The PPH Butterfly is designed to be used at an early stage of a PPH, usually as second line of treatment after the administration of oxytocic drugs. It is suitable for use by both midwives and obstetricians.

The images below illustrate how the PPH Butterfly device looks when it is being inserted and when bi-manual compression is being applied.

In Image 2 (below) The PPH Butterfly handles are brought together, creating a platform against which the uterus will be compressed

Image 4 (below) shows Bi manual compression  being applied using the PPH Butterfly device and a clinicians hand on the woman's abdomen, the woman's uterus (in red) is being compressed to stop the bleeding from the womb 

and finally in use (Image 4).

When used for an adequate period of time, the PPH Butterfly should halt any bleeding that has occurred as a result of uterine atony. We recommend that the compression is continued for five minutes before checking how effective it is. The aim is to reduce blood loss as well as the number of women needing to go to theatre for further treatment.
