Established in 1976 due to a shortage of medical professional, the Maastricht University is the second youngest Dutch university. It is ranked within the top 260 universities worldwide according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Currently the university takes just under 23,000 students, of which over half are foreign, and around 2,380 academic staff members. It is part of the World Universities Network as the network’s first and only Dutch university. The network offers a platform for education and transnational research projects of global importance.
