Heritage is celebrated across the city, with the largest collection of museums and galleries and Grade II-listed building anywhere outside of the Capital, Liverpool’s culture and heritage are at the very heart of the city.
The city region also has an abundance of outdoor spaces, parks, beaches and stunning coastline to explore. They are easy to access by train and there is so much to discover.
Culture and entertaining
The city is an important centre for culture not just in the northwest of England, but also in the United Kingdom more broadly. Its contributions to culture internationally were recognized in 2008 when it was named the European Capital of Culture and has been acknowledged as a UNESCO City of Music.
The Royal Albert Dock boasts the largest collection of Grade I-listed buildings in the UK.
Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery is the national gallery of the North and houses one of the best collections of European art outside London.
Liverpool is home to the only Tate Gallery in the North, one of the most visited art galleries in the UK.
The Museum of Liverpool is the first purpose-built museum in the UK for over 100 years and reflects the city’s global significance through its unique geography.
Liverpool boasts over a dozen theaters, hosting diverse events from large-scale West-End productions to one-off local community-based shows.
Music plays a significant role in Liverpool’s cultural scene, being home to the Beatles, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, British Music Experience and the Cavern Club. Liverpool was broadcast worldwide in 2023 when it hosted the 67th Eurovision Song Contest.
Sport and leisure
The city is home to two football clubs, Everton F.C., which will have a new stadium on the historic waterfront at Bramley Moore Dock, and Liverpool F.C., Britain’s most successful football club.
Liverpool is home to the largest open-air shopping centre's in the United Kingdom, Liverpool ONE. The 1.65 million sq. ft. complex includes over 160 stores, bars, and restaurants, a fantastic 14-screen cinema, an indoor adventure golf course and a five-acre park.
Liverpool has also hosted many festivals and public events in the past few years, including the 3 Queens event, which attracted 1 million people to the River Mersey, the Giants events, One Magnificent City, One Magical City, and many others.
Finally, the region is home to England’s Golf Coast, the UK’s largest concentration of links courses, including 2 PGA Championship courses.
Eating and drinking
From the traditional to the multi-cultural, you will find many treats on offer across the city to indulge your taste buds. Liverpool ONE hosts many restaurant chains across its shopping complex, offering choices from American, Italian, Thai, French, Chinese, Spanish, Indian and more. If you want to try something different, Bold Street is famous for its unique retailers and restaurants.
Liverpool’s relatively small city center also makes for an ideal night out, with clubs and bars on every corner. From Concert Square’s beats to Seel Street’s laid-back indie vibe, there’s truly something for everyone.
