Undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses
As part of its commitment to research-led teaching, the Unit has developed a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching modules focusing on the relationship between law and NCD prevention which invite students on its LLB and LLM programmes to reflect on how the tobacco, alcohol and food industries should be regulated.
Law and NCD prevention modules include:
- Public Health Law and Non-Communicable Disease Prevention (undergraduate, third year module).
- Law and Social Justice (undergraduate, second year module)
Pathway: Regulating the Tobacco, Alcohol and Food Industries to Promote Health and Sustainable Development
- Law and NCD Prevention in Europe (postgraduate LLM module).
- International Trade Law and Public Health (postgraduate LLM module) (scheduled to be offered from the 2019-20 academic year onwards)
Members of the Law & NCD Unit also supervise undergraduate and LLM dissertations. We welcome queries from students interested in researching the relationship between law and NCD prevention.
Postgraduate research
The Law & NCD Unit fosters a growing community of postgraduate researchers, including PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Our PGR students are currently working on topics which include nutrition labelling, food taxation and health inequalities, and the relationship between children’s rights, trade and NCD prevention.
The Law & NCD Unit is keen to expand its PGR community and is happy to support prospective postdoctoral fellows and PhD students wishing to conduct research in the field of law and NCD prevention.
The School of Law and Social Justice offers a number of postgraduate research funding opportunities.
Please feel free to contact our members to discuss supervision and funding plans.
Visiting fellows
The Law & NCD Unit has been delighted to host visiting researchers from institutions from around the globe. Our Visiting Fellows scheme is flexible – it is open to researchers at various levels of seniority (from PGR students to established academics) and for various lengths of time (from stays of a few days to stays of a few months).
The School of Law and Social Justice offers an International Visiting Research Fellowship which interested colleagues may want to consider for financial support towards their travelling and accommodation expenses.
If you would like to visit the Law & NCD Unit to conduct a specific research project on law and NCD prevention, please contact the Unit’s Director, Professor Amandine Garde.
Legal capacity building courses, masterclasses, and training opportunities
The Law & NCD Unit has designed and delivered a range of training programmes and masterclasses intended to help the public health community build its legal capacity and feel better equipped to address NCDs.
We work flexibly and are happy to adapt our course offering, subject to our own capacity. Our training courses have lasted between one day and a full week, depending on the partners involved (international organisations, States or public health agencies, non-governmental organisations), and the objectives that they pursue. We focus each course on a specific issue (for example, food marketing, tobacco plain packaging, minimum unit pricing of alcoholic beverages) and/or on one or more overarching issues (for instance, international trade law and NCD prevention, human rights and NCD prevention, using law effectively for the development and implementation of more effective NCD prevention strategies, the role of European Union law in preventing NCDs).
To discuss training and legal capacity building opportunities, please contact the Unit’s Director, Professor Amandine Garde.
