Rosario Salvatore Aitala (Catania, Italy, 24 September 1967) is judge of the Pre-Trial Division of the International Criminal Court and has been since March 2018.
He also teaches International Criminal Law at the Luiss University in Rome.
He has worked as a professional judge and prosecutor in Milano, Trapani (Sicily) and Rome, with a focus on Mafia, terrorism, corruption, financial crime and offences against vulnerable persons.
Judge Aitala has completed several international assignments as expert, consultant and lecturer in over thirty countries - dealing with security issues, terrorism, organised crime and institutional building; and has resided medium- and long-term in Albania, Afghanistan and Latin America.
He has been senior security adviser to three Italian foreign ministers; and senior international and legal adviser to the President of the Senate, the second highest political figure in Italy.
He has lectured in criminal law, criminal procedure and international relations and is scientific adviser and author of the Italian Review of Geopolitics “Limes”. His latest publication is a book on the history of terrorism: “Il metodo della paura. Terrorismi e terroristi” (The method of fear. Terrorisms and terrorists).
