The European Children’s Rights Unit (ECRU) is a research-intensive cluster located within the University of Liverpool’s School of Law and Social Justice. Our work pursues the following three aims:
- Assist children in enforcing their rights;
- Shape the future of children’s rights as a thriving field of academic study;
- Provide expertise on the interaction between children’s rights and other legal fields.
Our members have specific expertise in progressive participatory approaches to research involving children and in building capacities among practitioners and policy makers – through training, consultancy and strategic litigation - to enable all of us to apply a children's rights-based approach to our work. We established, and continue to work with, the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG), which brings together local children and young people to provide input into the design, implementation, and dissemination of University of Liverpool research projects.
Our members have expertise in a wide range of fields, including immigration and asylum, children’s rights in the legal process, children and sport, education, criminal justice, Brexit, children’s sexual and gender identity, child labour and best interests decision-making. See our members section for more information.
Children and Childhood is a major research theme within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is led by Professor Helen Stalford.
The University of Liverpool has an outstanding tradition of providing significant and meaningful contributions towards improving the quality of life and outcomes for children, young people and babies locally, nationally and internationally.
The Children and Childhood research theme allows us to build on existing research collaborations and explore new opportunities between centres of excellence across the University’s faculties.
