About Corporations, Law, and Society (CLAS)

The Corporations, Law, and Society research unit brings together academics, researchers, policy-shapers and corporate experts to rethink the key legal principles and assumptions governing the relationship between corporations and society.

We are interested in harnessing humanities and social sciences methods to both question and re-imagine the role of law in enabling good corporate citizenship.

Our goal is to provide a space in which academics, postgraduate researchers and visiting scholars can share and develop ideas and research around responsible corporate behaviour. We are interested in exploring national and international regulation of corporate actors, particularly where their activities exacerbate or have the potential to address key societal challenges. Our interests are wide-ranging and include corporate social responsibility and accountability in areas including climate change and sustainability, the treatment of workers, the (mis)use of corporate vehicles in financial crime and the impact of the practices of large corporations in industries including technology and AI, energy, sport, finance, and manufacturing on the lives of states and their citizens.

CLAS invites expert contributors from within and outside the School of Law and Social Justice to present and discuss their work, and otherwise engage with research and knowledge exchange. Alongside research into diverse facets of corporations and their role in society, CLAS is committed to exploring innovative approaches to teaching in the related fields and subjects. We welcome members of all theoretical persuasions.
