This workshop offers postgraduate students, their supervisors and others engaged in relevant research, the chance to hear lessons from practice and lived experience and explore what it means to adopt a trauma-informed approach to research. It builds on leading research expertise in participatory methods, ethics, and trauma to interrogate:
• The meaning, value and core components of a trauma-informed approach to research;
• The extent to which a trauma-informed approach is distinctive from and enhances existing research ethical standards and protocols; and
• How we can build capacity and support for trauma-informed approaches within academic settings.

10:00 - Welcome, Introductions and Setting the Scene: Helen Beckett and Helen Stalford – are we all speaking the same language when we refer to a ‘trauma-informed approach’?
10:15-12:15 - Session 1: Lessons from Practice and Lived Experience
12:15-12:45 – Breakout discussions to explore how: the insights from practice and lived experience might inform approaches to research; identify anticipated benefits and challenges of cross-fertilising in this way.
12:45-13:30 - Lunch
13:30-14:30 - Session 2: Applying a Trauma-Informed approach to research
14:30-15:00 – Into breakout tables to respond to some specific questions around issues such as: what does a trauma-informed approach add to standard research ethics?; what structural and procedural mechanisms are needed within HEIs to accommodate a T-I approach?
15:00-15:15 - Comfort break
15:15-16:00 - Next Steps – setting an agenda for a trauma-informed approach to research.
Bursaries
A limited number of PGR bursaries are available to cover travel expenses to attend the event in person in Liverpool.
Bursaries are available up to the value of £50.
