Pathways to the Judiciary event returns
Following the overwhelming success of last year’s scheme, which saw over 50 students gain invaluable shadowing experience with esteemed judges, the Pathways to the Judiciary Event is back for its second year.
The event is a celebration of diversity within the legal system and a call to action for building a more inclusive judiciary. Through firsthand stories and open dialogue, students will have the chance to connect with practicing judges, learn about their professional journeys and better understand the judicial system. Attendees will also delve into the critical steps being taken to address under-representation and encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply for judicial roles.
One of the highlights of the event will be smaller breakout sessions, giving students the opportunity to explore areas of specific interest. These sessions provide a more personalised approach, enabling attendees to ask questions and deepen their understanding of how the judiciary operates in practice.
Crucially, students who attend the event will have the chance to submit their interest in court marshalling and shadowing placements across the Northwest of England. These one-day placements, set to take place in Spring/Summer 2025, will provide students with hands-on experience and enhance their employability by offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the legal profession.
The impact of last year’s event on students has been overwhelmingly positive.
Ellie Dugmore, second-year LLB student, shared: “It was an amazing experience, Judge Huxley allowed me to read up on the cases before they arrived in court and explained the key legal issues to me. I got to see in person and phone-in cases of a variety of issues. He gave me career advice and looked over my CV with me to improve it. He introduced me to everyone who came into the court and made me feel very welcome to be sat there. Overall, an amazing experience and I would recommend it to anyone who asked”.
Tehmeenah Aziz, third-year LLB student reflected: “During this work experience, I was able to attend court hearings with Judge Richard Pearce, witnessing him carry out medical negligence hearings. I was also able to ask Judge Pearce questions about navigating a legal career and learn about his own experiences as a judge. Through this work experience, I was also able to handle the relevant court documents for the court hearings and understand how amounts paid to the claimants were calculated”.
Why this event matters
On the importance of diversity in the judiciary, Mrs Justice Thornton, said: “Diversity is fundamental to the rule of law, given the immense power the judiciary exerts over the lives of others. It is vital that the judiciary reflects our society, in order to increase public consent, respect and confidence in the judiciary. Through a diverse judiciary, the law in turn adapts to protect the changing values we recognise".
The Pathways to the Judiciary event is more than just an opportunity to explore the judiciary—it’s a movement towards a more inclusive and representative legal system. By attending, students can make invaluable connections, gain practical insights and take the first steps toward a meaningful and impactful legal career.
Eligibility and benefits
The event is open to second-year and third-year LLB students, as well as LLM students. Students who attend the event will be given priority when placements become available for Spring/Summer 2025. After attending the event, an application form will be forwarded to students who can submit their interest. The Judiciary has provided a criteria of eligibility for their placements. If you meet these criteria, you will be invited on to the scheme to undertake a placement.
