Window turbine on a cloudy day.

On 18 January, Dr John Tribe, Senior Lecturer at the Liverpool Law School, delivered an invited lecture to the Chancery Bar Association (CBA) in London for their 2025 annual conference.

Together with the Insolvency Service’s Justin Dionne (Director, Official Receiver Services), Dr John Tribe shared expertise relating to trading national interest liquidations.

The lecture argued, amongst other points, that national interest liquidations represent bankruptcy communitarian theory in action. The use of liquidation to help obtain benefit for wider stakeholders in insolvency is pragmatic and to be encouraged.

The talk featured discussion of recent high profile cases including Baglan, Thomas Cook, British Steel, Carillon, SSI, and UKCloud.

Dr John Tribe noted, “It was a great privilege to deliver a talk to the CBA with Justin and to help highlight the important and complex work being undertaken on national interest liquidations by the Insolvency Service.”

“Feeding into discussions at government level which relate to stakeholders including the environment and employees is interesting, and impactful work.

With these types of businesses you cannot immediately shut up shop. There is lots at stake including thousands of employees, massive environmental and health and safety factors, life and government critical contracts and thousands of customers.”

Other speakers included UK Supreme Court Judge Lord Richards, Mr Justice Thompsell, and Professor Graham Virgo KC (Hon) of the University of Cambridge.
