During the third year of their four-year degree, students will spend a year in industry, working at a busy and high-profile firm of solicitors in the city of Liverpool. This immersive experience will allow them to engage with complex legal work at a practical level, liaise with fee earners and clients and get a valuable and rewarding insight into legal practice.
This course is designed to provide a modern legal education that addresses the needs and concerns of society in the 21st century. Whether students are considering a career in law or any other field, this course will challenge and inspire them. The placement, which lasts a minimum of 40 weeks, is a paid opportunity, and our partner law firms adhere to the real Living Wage standards.
For the inaugural year of the course, this exciting opportunity is initially open to applications from current University of Liverpool second-year Law LLB (Hons) students. Their current course will be extended by one year, during which they will undertake a placement at one of our partner law firms. Upon completion of the course, they will graduate with a Law in a Year in Industry LLB (Hons).
Please note that Law with a Year in Industry is not open to external applicants and students cannot apply for a place via UCAS.
Please be aware that the number of placements available is very limited. Students from under-represented backgrounds, or those who believe they would face barriers when entering the world of work, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Careers and employability
This course will provide students with rigorous training in legal analysis and promotes critical thinking, communication, independent research, and project management skills. The third year of this course is a professional placement at a law firm right here in Liverpool. Some of this invaluable experience will be recognised as qualifying work experience for the purposes of the postgraduate Solicitors Qualifying Examination, setting students on the path to a successful legal career as a solicitor.
How to apply
Applications for Law with a Year in Industry placements starting in September 2025/26 will open in January 2025 and be available to 2nd year students only. All information concerning the course content, how to apply, available placements and what is required of students will be released then.
Please note, this course is not registered via UCAS so it does not have a UCAS code. So if you are a prospective student interested in completing a Year in Industry you do not have to select it prior to admission.
Students will not be able to find their own placements. The only placements on offer will be with firms and organisations who have agreed a partnership with the School of Law and Social Justice.
