Applications now open for the School of Law and Social Justice’s Second Summer School in the Law of the Council of Europe
Applications are now open for the School of Law and Social Justice’s Second Summer School in the Law of the Council of Europe. Organised by the International Law and Human Rights Unit, the Summer School brings together key decision makers from the Council of Europe, European Court of Human Rights, and world-leading academics for interactive masterclasses to engage attendees in human rights, the rule of law, and democracy.
Following the success of the previous year, we’re delighted to continue our partnership with the Council of Europe, in the delivery of this year’s Summer School which focusses on the ‘Council of Europe at 75’. The theme will be ‘Protecting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in a rapidly changing world’, and will reflect on certain key modern-day challenges, discussing what role the Council of Europe can play in the era of digital revolution and new technologies.
In line with University’s commitment to the advancement of learning – a core component of the UN Sustainable Development Goals – the Summer School offers the opportunity to foster global partnerships, whilst providing quality education on key issues impacting human rights law in Europe.
Speaking of the Summer School's success, co-organiser Professor Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou, shared:
“Our annual summer school is yet another step in cementing close collaboration and partnership between the School of Law and Social Justice and the Council of Europe. Unique in both its content and attending guests, we’re delighted that our summer school attracted such high interest last year.
Participants were exposed to the top concentrate of expertise and world leading research in the area of the law of the council of Europe, gaining high-level insight from experienced speakers. The summer school adds to the pre-existing opportunities available to our students in the School of Law and Social Justice, with internships available in Strasbourg to work with one of the Judges of the European Court of Human Rights. We also host a judge of the European Court here in Liverpool annually. These are necessary steps we’re implementing to ensure our students and researchers are well-versed in human rights law and it’s application from a global perspective.”
The Summer School is open to postgraduate taught (Masters) and research (PhD) students, post-doctoral researchers, early career scholars, and practitioners interested in the law of the Council of Europe, and in human rights, rule of law and democracy. It is also open to lawyers, but also to individuals specialising in contiguous areas (e.g. political science).
Scholarships are also available to selected participants, provided by the Council of Europe, Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, and the International Law and Human Rights Unit.
Applications are open until 14 April 2024, 23:59 UK time.
