Judge of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea will join the School as a Judge in Residence
Judge Ida Caracciolo will join the International Law and Human Rights Unit in the School of Law and Social Justice as a Judge in Residence for 2024 – 2025. The International Judge in Residence programme is designed to strengthen the links between international courts and the Unit.
Each year a judge is selected to visit the University of Liverpool to deliver a lecture and support our research activities. Judge Ida Caracciolo brings a wealth of experience and expertise amassed over decades of service in various capacities, to the both the International Law and Human Rights Unit and the School of Law and Social Justice.
Judge Caracciolo has served as Judge of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea since October 2020, following an extensive career spanning academia and legal practice. Judge Caracciolo has also been a Full Professor of International Law at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” since 2005.
Speaking of the appointment, Professor Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou, Director of the International Law and Human Rights Unit, shared:
“We are extremely happy to welcome Judge Caracciolo as our newest International Judge in Residence. This is the first time that a judge of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea joins us in this capacity. We are looking forward to many fruitful academic conversations with Judge Caracciolo in the next academic year.”
Judge Ida Caracciolo has held many prestigious appointments throughout her career. Before joining the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea, Judge Caracciolo has also been Deputy Arbitrator of the OSCE Court of Arbitration and Conciliation since 2019; a Member of the Italian National Group of the Permanent Court of Arbitration since 2014; and a Member of the Administrative Tribunal of the IILA (International Italo-Latin American Organisation) since 2022.
In recent years, Judge Caracciolo has served as an ad-hoc Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, and a Consultant to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Legal Service from 1994 until 2020, participating as a member of the Italian delegation in various organs and committees of the United Nations, the European Union, and the Council of Europe, and in numerous multilateral and bilateral negotiations.
Judge Caracciolo was also the Counsel of Italy in several international disputes before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the Arbitral Tribunal, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Court of Human Rights.
