What made you want to study at UTSA?
I have always enjoyed American culture, especially their sports at both a professional and university level. Therefore, I always knew I wanted to go to America for my year abroad, but ‘why UTSA’ comes down to Texas. I knew they had sports covered as American Football is basically a religion there, but as well as this, the Texan culture is something I really wanted to experience and embrace. I knew it would be like nothing I had seen before (and I was not wrong), so I felt UTSA would be right for me. UTSA being in San Antonio was also a big factor. The city is the 7th largest in the US and has so much to offer with the downtown area, which includes the Riverwalk that is full of bars and restaurants and The Pearl (which is an old brewery that is now converted into markets and more). As well as being able to watch the city’s pro basketball team (San Antonio Spurs), I also had the opportunity to watch UTSA’s Baseball and American Football teams regularly, which I loved.
What did you enjoy most about studying at UTSA?
Studying at the University of Texas at San Antonio is an experience I am truly grateful for, as it was enjoyable and something new. The thing I enjoyed the most about studying at UTSA was the range of varying modules that were available to me. Due to American Legal Education, I could not study completely law-related modules, but this ended up being something that made my year abroad even better as I was then able to choose modules that I couldn’t do back home. This really expanded my knowledge and helped me to embrace other passions that I have. I picked up classes such as Sports Management, Ancient Greek History and Criminology, to name a few. It must also be mentioned that going to lectures in 30-degree heat was a challenge, but one could argue that it was better than the rain we get back home!
Would you encourage someone to choose UTSA for their year abroad?
I would definitely encourage anyone to choose UTSA for their year abroad. It may sound cliché, but everyone was incredibly friendly at the University (especially when you mention that you’re from England). One of the main points I would say as a reason to go to UTSA for your year abroad is the people that you meet there. There are plenty of events, societies and gatherings that you can attend, and I was encouraged from day one by other students to go to as many as possible, which was great advice. I made lifelong friends and even attended the odd Frat event here and there. I found the University to be very accommodating for me as an international student, and both the students and the staff were always there to check up on me and make sure that I was settling in well.
