What made you decide to study at Leiden?
I have A-levels in French and German and wanted to expand my languages further. I knew Dutch shared linguistic similarities with both of these dialects, and so when the option to study in the Netherlands came along, I naturally jumped at the opportunity.
I’m also working towards a bachelors in law, so studying in the Netherlands particularly appealed to me as it is home to some really famous legal institutions such as the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, all of which I was lucky enough to visit.
What did you enjoy most about studying at Leiden?
I really liked the feel of the city. The people there were all so friendly, and the food especially was great. (I recommend poffertjes and bitterballen for a quintessentially Dutch experience!) I also loved how bike-friendly the city was, which made getting to and from places really easy. The scenery in Leiden and The Hague stood out to me the most though. Both places were so picturesque and quaint they were like something out of a fairy tale, especially with the stunning backdrops of the canals and cobbled streets.
What would you say to someone to encourage them to choose Leiden as their year abroad option?
Leiden is a bustling, cosmopolitan metropolis and a great place to go if you want to explore other parts of Europe whilst on your year abroad. Public transport is frequent and straightforward, the food is delicious, the sights are stunning, and most importantly, the locals are extremely friendly and helpful - I never felt like an outsider or a tourist whilst I was there.
