Thursday 28th April saw the first Liverpool Law Clinic Open Evening event of 2022. Hosted in the School of Law and Social Justice Building, we sat down with Siobhan from the Clinic to talk all about it!
Last Thursday evening saw the Law and Social Justice Building buzzing with activity, as first and second-year students were invited to come and see what the Liverpool Law Clinic is all about. Law Clinic staff organised the event to help explain what the Clinical Legal Skills modules involve and encourage students considering choosing the clinic modules and projects to learn more about Clinic activities. Many student helpers were also on hand to share their experiences at the Law Clinic, and to guide students around our amazing building including our state-of-the-art Law Clinic computer suite. The computer suite is exclusively reserved for Law Clinic students as a space for group work on client cases. This setting is ideal for group work as it gives students the opportunity to collaborate on cases and discuss client data in a confidential space that only other clinic students can access and is one of many reasons why the Law Clinic modules and projects are so popular.
The evening included talks from the lawyers who help run the Law Clinic and students both past and present who have benefited from the experience the clinic modules and projects have given them. One such speaker was Holly Knowles, a University of Liverpool graduate who took part in the Law Clinic modules when she was a student and now works as a Family Paralegal at MSB Solicitors. Holly was happy to share how invaluable the Law Clinic was to helping her secure her first job at MSB as this gave her an edge over other candidates due to her practical first-hand experience with Law Clinic clients.
One student who is currently on the Law Clinic module, Grace Kelly, said “The Law Clinic is such an amazing opportunity for students and I’ve met the nicest people whilst working on the module. This has been a lovely evening and a good way of celebrating everything our work has achieved.”
The evening was both informative and lively, with plenty of pizza, chilled wine and beer on hand to entice students to stick around after the talks and socialise with fellow students and staff. Student helpers were keen to share their positive experiences of the Clinic and how much they enjoy the work they were given. One student helper, Ashley Dempsey said: “The evening was very informative with a great guest speaker (Holly Knowles). The Law Clinic are doing fantastic things and their success with engaging so many young people at this event is a testament to that.”
The overall success of the event was overwhelming, with over 100 students in attendance. We are hopeful that the evening was informative and have made students want to take part in the modules and to see more of what the Liverpool Law Clinic has to offer.
