Overview
This language module is designed for students who have completed Level 903/003 Elementary 3 or have a A2.1 standard of the language in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), for example a GCSE. Through a variety of methods, students will develop competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking and an understanding of grammar. At the end of this 12 week-module, students will have reached an A2.2 proficiency level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and will be able to carry out very simple everyday tasks in the language. Students will be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. They will be able to talk about shopping preferences, describe character and physical appearance, tell what happens in a precise moment in the past and inquire about travel costs. They will be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. They will have a basic understanding of significant aspects of life and culture of the country and intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.
Syllabus
You will learn to express yourself in the past tense and in the imperfect tense, describe the features and the personality of a person, express feelings and emotions, talk about leisure activities, family, work, ideas, planning, and useful expressions to travel by train. You will learn to make comparisons and interact when shopping. The grammar will focus on past tense, pronominal verbs and imperative. You will be reading stories, watching videos, and making elementary presentations.
Grammatical content:
- Pronominal verbs farcela and andarsene
- The use of passato prossimo and imperfetto
- The particle “ci” used with certain verbs to replace a word or phrase introduced by a preposition
- The imperative “tu”
- The direct object pronouns
- Stare + gerund to express a progressive action

Study Hours
The total number of study hours for this module is 150 hours, in line with undergraduate university modules. This includes class meetings, assessment preparation and self-directed study in line with guidance from the course lecturer.
If you are studying on the extracurricular option, we recognise that the total number of hours that you may be able to study every week may depend on your availability and previous experience studying languages, however, expected contribution to classes, homework completion, and learning outcomes will not vary.

Course Lecturer: Dr Clarissa Frigerio
Clarissa was born in a town near Lake Como in Italy. She holds a MA from West Virginia University and is certified to Teach English as a Second Language. Recently, she was awarded a PhD in Education from Edge Hill University, focusing on gender and education. She has taught Italian as a second language in many different countries and at different levels. Her teaching style is communicative language learning, which helps students to learn a foreign language in an interactive way, whilst focusing on grammar.
Based in Liverpool she spends her time teaching classes and hiking in the Peak District.
Fees for language courses are £190/£95.
